An Italian white wine with a potential which is not fully explored yet in terms of quality as well as of potential for aging. In my opinion, the one produced by Fattoria Colsanto (of the Livon group) in Umbria (central Italy) remains a didactic and enjoyable reference: “Cantaluce”.

trebbiano spoletino cantaluce by colsanto – umbria

I am referring to Trebbiano Spoletino, local white grape which is becoming more and more popular and it is really appreciated among the best wine experts for its ability to combine richness, texture and longevity.

So, alonf with very well managed Sagrantino in a not really easy vintage (2017) – just presented on the occasion of the Sagrantino Preview held in June 2021 (Anteprima Sangrantino) – I like to focus on the only white wine of the company produced since 2017 with the 2018 vintage recently released: Trebbiano Spoletino 100% from almost 30 years old vines, vinified and matured in 225L and 25Hl oak barrels, aged on fine lees for 8 months before bottle aging.

2018 is as bright as usual. The nose is intense and developed with notes of yellow peach, candied lemon and an exotic touch of pineapple; then chamomile and hints of butter on a mineral and slightly smoky background. The sip is “fat” also thanks to the tactile sensation, round but balanced thanks to a refreshing and savory touch that enriches and lengthens it.

2017, drunk today (read the old review here) is less exuberant but more penetrating on the nose, absolutely in line with 2018 with notes of yellow fruit ranging from citron jam to exotic, enriched with earthy notes, sugared almonds and a salty touch. Mature sip but still well supported by acidity, with a greater impact also in terms of texture: it stays long and holds up well the truffle served as an aperitif.
