Kosher wine is the wine which can be drunk by Jews basing on their philosophy and religion.
There is a very specific legislation that regulates all the food sector by establishing the rules to be followed basing on the nature of the product, in the case of animals, basing on the nature of the animal itself up to even the prohibition of certain foods.
With regard to the wine some of the most important rules to follow are:
- First of all the prohibition of drinking wine or cooking with wine vinegar unsupervised by the Rabbi
- any manual operation must be performed by observant Jews as well as the launch of the machines
- plants in metal/fiberglass must be washed with water, soda, and water again
- rubber parts must be new
- Filters must not contain starch or derivatives from other cereals
- etc
And so on with a series of related transactions, to be recognized by 3 elements:
- the name of the rabbi who controls and issues the certificate must appear on the label
- any back label or capsule
- cap with the brand/symbol of the Rabbinate
There are many Italian companies (and not) which have started the production of kosher wines, for cultural reasons and clearly business. Among the various Italian wines there are wines produced in Campania region (south of Italy), Chianti, Barbera d’Alba, Valpolicella Classico etc., in 2016 also the first Amarone della Valpolicella Kosher should be launched.
In Italy the agency that deals with them is the Italy Kosher Union.

It is also very interesting the white “Campanaro” (blend of Fiano and Greco) with hints of candied and a smoky touch. But as I anticipated the group have also invested out of Campania region for example in Basilicata region (with the company Basilisco) and in Puglia. Among them the company Cefalicchio (biodynamic) which I really appreciate the whites of. And always in Puglia region, the winery Ognissole with the production of Primitivo “Essentia” which is very interesting. I like to emphasize the production of Kosher […]
