The 3 main monotheistic religions have a very different view about wine and alchool in general and this affects our wine consumptions.

Of course it depends on the Holy Writes. I am glad to report about a study on this theme.

  • JUDAISM

In the first chapters of the Bibble, the wine does not play a good role but everything changes in the following ones. God requires the Israelites to bring wine to the altar as a sacrifice (Exodus 29:40) and tells people to enjoy wine during the festivals (Deuteronomy 14:26). Wine is required in Sabbath, Passover, at circumcision ceremonies and weddings.

  • CHRISTIANITY

The Holy Bibble underlines the importance to drink with moderation but the role of wine is surely positive. It is considered important to honor God and to reinforce the community. (The role of the conviviality was born here already!). After all, the first Sacre-ScrittureJesus public miracle seems to be the transformation of water into wine during a wedding (John 2: 1-11)!

  • ISLAM

The Quran addresses the questions in contradictory ways but the result is clear! It states that there is something good in wine but the potential for harm is greater (2:219). Yet, believers that they should not approach their prayers in a state of intoxication (4:43): an important restriction given that they have to pray 5 times per day!
