Cantina Ninni is now a reference for an increasingly popular production in Umbria region in Central Italy: the one related to the white variety Trebbiano Spoletino, an eclectic white of great personality. And who knows Gianluca Piernera, the founder, easily find his frankness in every vintage, in every glass.

We are in Spoleto area, in the production zone of the DOC ‘Trebbiano Spoletino’ and ‘Colli Martani’, at 350 m a.s.l. with predominantly clayey soil, rich in minerals with marl substrates treated according to the dictates of organic viticulture on plants of about 35 years. The first bottle was released onto the market in 2012 but Piernera soon got popular and successful thanks to his focused approach.

Within its wide line made of both white and red wines, Poggio del Vescovo is one of the most representative: Trebbiano Spoletino 100%, an ancient variety which fall into oblivion until 10/15 years ago. A late-ripening grape variety, which differs from Trebbiano Toscano, Soave or Abruzzese, still belonging to the same huge family which, therefore, can generate confusion.

It offers vibrant acidity and strong versatility that allows to choose the preferred vinification processes: it is available as still and dry, sparkling or passito, macerated or not, matured in different containers and without losing character and complexity with hints that often recall citrus and exotic touches with good aging potential.

Gianluca’s Poggio del Vescovo Spoleto Trebbiano Spoletino DOC is vinified only in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. Here is the development over the years:

2020 (regular vintage)

Gold nuances, mineral, citrus and Mediterranean herb for a fine bouquet. Refreshing and savory, long finish. Subtle and sober but elegant wine.

2019 (cooler vintage)

Bruised apple and dried herbs on the nose. Almost sharp acidity, to be tried again over the years.

2018 (irregular vintage)

Bright; toasted hazelnut, banana peel and vegetal sensations that outline a multifaceted character. Not perfectly integrated (yet), dry finish.

2017 (hot year)

Golden but less deep in colour. Fine nose with mineral aromas of rock, golden apple, candied citrus. It combines concentration and acidity. The dry finish makes it perfect with food

2016 (very balanced vintage)

Gold with green reflections. The tertiary aromas prevail on the nose with almond and coffee, then unripe pineapple. On the palate, the texture is smooth, the acidity is vibrant, the finish is long. More austere.

2015 (warm but not hot)

Deep gold in colour. Developed nose with scents of ripe fruits such as preserved peach, bergamot marmalade, custard and then oregano. Round and balanced especially thanks to the savory character. Good potential for ageing.
