About Tenuta di Saragano I had already written here. One of the estates with vineyards at highest altitudes in Montefalco area (Umbria region, Central Italy) that also thanks to the biodiversity of the estate and the consequent protection, the age of the vines as well as the centenary sovoir-faire, draws Sagrantino around a perfect balance to make it accessible without rushing into releasing wines on the market until they are not really ready to this purpose.

The Anteprima Sagrantino event, held in June 2021 thanks to the determination of the Consortium which postponed it to June 2021 (from February, due to Covid-19 restrictions) but does not cancel it, was an opportunity to compare some of the latest vintages.

SAGRANTINO DI MONTEFALCO DOCG 2017

A glass that reflects the difficult vintage with, perhaps, an early evolution on the nose: pot-pourri and red fruits jam precede kirsch hints, a touch of black pepper and toasty notes. Round on the palate but still unready. Useless to venture conclusions, it is really too early especially for Sagrantino di Montefalco. And as far as I’m concerned, any excuse is good to go visit the partners Riccardo and Ivan, possibly with my colleague Matteo De Paoli, also to visit La Ghirlanda wine resort.

SAGRANTINO DI MONTEFALCO DOCG 2015

Deep nose with notes of kirsch, parpika, coffee powder and leather on a refreshing background of medicinal herbs and pungent spices. On the palate it offers an excellent balance between concentration, acidity and perfectly ripe tannins. The fruit is intact for a juicy, persistent and harmonious sip.

SAGRANTINO DI MONTEFALCO DOCG 2014

Subtle nose with notes of red cherry, white pepper, red oranges, mushrooms and violet infusion. Fine and lively, the structure is lightened by the fresh vintage but, evidently, very well managed in the cellar as well as by the vineyard itself which, in fact, here has not faced serious difficulties.

SAGRANTINO DI MONTEFALCO DOCG 2012

The nose is defined and still “crunchy” with notes of blackberry, wet earth and chocolate. Dynamic and dense at the same time. The balance between the tannic structure and the concentration is therefore beautiful. Persistent and consistent.
