The Rural Food Festival is the event organized from 8 to 12 December to enhance the food culture of Calabria region and the area of Pollino park, at North, in particular. From the promotion of the principles of the Mediterranean diet to sustainability, from technical tastings to educational activities for the new generations or the development of food and wine tourism.
An event of good complexity that involved different actors of the supply chain, organized and conceived by the Municipality of Castrovillari town with important support and contributions that drew from the professionalism of the journalist Vincenzo Alvaro.
The occasion was perfect for to focus on a wine excellence: Magliocco, a native black grape variety protagonist of the province of Cosenza, Northern Calabria, especially that of Pollino sub-area and its surroundings.
In a world that is looking for unique and, therefore, inimitable wines and vines, Upper Calabria offer all the ingredients for the production of a wine that is not only typical but with great personality; a wine able of offering variegated nuances based on interpretations and without losing character.
We could cite numerous examples, here are the 6 wines tasted at the opening of the festival on 8 December.
“Corallo” Igp Calabria Pollino 2020 – Tenute Ferrari
We start with a captivating wine, quite deep in color with a welcoming nose of lingonberry candy, pomegranate and face powder then puffs of chinotto.
Consistent on the palate, playing with softness and sweetness rather than acidity. A greedy wine, easy to drink
“C’era suolo e ce n’è ancora” 2020 – Giuseppe Calabrese
Intense and genuine. Cerasa, fur and a refreshing note of laurel on the nose announce an equally composite sip: dry, full-bodied and juicy. More “shady”, it lasts a long time with a return of crunchy cherry.
Pollino Magliocco Dop 2020 – Celimarro
Compact nose of sour cherry, wild strawberry, earth and a slight spiciness. Snappy and fruity with strong tannins that support a structured wax. Determined but well balanced
Cervinago rosso Calabria IGP 2019 – Cervinago
Fine but penetrating nose of preserved cherry enriched with subtle notes of cocoa and then Mediterranean scrub. A wine with a dynamic sip thanks to a mature and perfectly integrated, flowing and elegant tannin.
Pollino Riserva 24 Dop 2015 – Ferrocinto
Consistent and deep on the nose with notes of black fruits, macerated black cherry, undergrowth and woody. The imposing tannic structure defines an impacting body. Concentrated and persistent. Approaching the older vintages reveals the undisputed aging potential
Rosso Viola IGP Calabria 2014 – Cantine Viola
A perfect balance and shape resulting from a cooler vintage that will not allow for an important aging like other vintages but which guarantees immediate drinking. The smoky note accompanied by black pepper, grilled cherry and a hint of vanilla is evident. Incredible balance of extract, acidity, tannin.
