Pierpaolo Messina took over the reins of the family business, Marabino, in 2008 when he returned to Sicily, Southern Italy, after experiences in Tuscany. Today he works on about 30 hectares of property in the Noto Valley conducted in biodynamic agriculture. The vineyards are located in the low hills with a particularly sunny but windy climate and characterized by significant diurnal ranges. Parcellation, spontaneous fermentations and the absence of additives are some of the key principles.
I got to try two important expressions recently, here are some notes.
- MUSCATEDDA – Terre Siciliane Bianco IGT 2020
White Muscat, vinified with indigenous yeasts in steel with the skins
A captivating wine since its golden color that strikes for its strong and rich character. The bouquet has the intensity of the aromatic grape variety: preserved peach, white musk, infused white flowers, sage and a hint of toasted almond. On the palate it is round and enveloping but remains dry and slightly dry in search of a taste balance of its own. A complex and full wine with long finish, bodied and round. What a nice bottle.
- ROSSO DI CONTRADA – Terre Siciliane Rosso IGT 2017
Nero d’Avola from 4 plots, vinified in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and a long maceration.
Imposing and impenetrable wine. Austere with notes of sour cherry immediately chased by bitter cocoa, roots and pure licorice then hints of tar. On the palate it is dense and structures, dry and with an imposing tone also due to a hot vintage.
