The similarity between wine and producer is a recurring joke in the wine sector. First of all, we should associate a personality with wine; after all, terms such as character, finesse and elegance, firmness or sobriety suggest this to us.
I was thinking about it while tasting, once again, the wines of Laura De Vito who in 2018 starts with an adventure very focused on Fiano in Irpinia, the internal and cool area of Campania region (Southern Italy) where Fiano responds very well; and with the consultancy of Mercurio they focused on the zoning aiming for longevity.
Reserved but determined, she produces crus of great character that conquer at the first taste and from which you can easily grasp the zoning that this territory deserves.
From the latest tastings of these Fiano di Avellino DOCG distinguishable by origin but firm in terms of approach, here are some notes for the more curious while inviting you to meet Laura and her husband at the first possible opportunity.
VERZARE 2021 and ARIANIE’ 2021 both tempt with notes of ripe fruit refreshed by green citrus fruits and sulfur; the first is also floral, the second more balsamic with aromas of anise. On the palate they both offer a refreshing acidity.
LI SAURUNI 2021 is fatter and fruitier with iodine puffs and a consistently richer palate with a more developed profile.
ARIANELLO 2019 integrated, once again confirming the potential for ageing of Fiano di Avellino. Rich and satisfying, on the nose it offers a stratification of sulfurous notes, rock, candied citrus and fennel for a velvety texture and a long and savory finish. Probably my favorite one.
ELLE 2018. It is a blend of all the territories. The nose of anchovies recalls the iodine touch of Li Sauruni, the fruity notes and the medicinal touch the others. On the palate it is clean, rich and well defined.
The vineyards are at about 600 m above sea level, wines are matured in stainless steel on fine lees, aged in bottle for several months before the release onto the market.
