Resistant grape varieties – the so-called PIWI – are increasingly at the center of the international debate about the future of wine, particularly in relation to environmental sustainability, reduction of vineyard treatments and adaptation to climate change. We have discussed this topic on these pages.
In this context, the PIWI Wine Tasting organized by Fondazione Edmund Mach plays a particularly valuable role. More than a simple competition, it represents an annual opportunity for discussion and in-depth analysis of a topic that is becoming increasingly central in the contemporary wine landscape. It is an occasion I always follow with great interest, precisely because the Mach Foundation succeeds in bringing together research, tasting and technical debate.
The challenge for PIWI varieties today is not only resistance to diseases and the reduction of treatments, but above all the ability to build a convincing wine identity for these grapes.
The 5th edition of the tasting, held in San Michele all’Adige, featured wines from across Italy and, for the first time, also from abroad, evaluated by a panel composed of researchers, winemakers, technicians and wine communicators.
As the results clearly show, a great deal of work has been carried out especially on white wines – including some orange wines, aromatic varieties and a few sweet wines often achieving the most significant results. Red wines, on the other hand, still have some aspects to refine, and this year’s results seem to confirm that.
A sincere thank you to the Fondazione Edmund Mach for creating this opportunity for discussion and insight, which is truly valuable for anyone closely following the evolution of resistant grape varieties.
